Tom Dixon: Dock Kitchen & Shop

When I was given the opportunity to discuss and discover Tom Dixon in his landmark store at Portobello Dock, I had to jump at the opportunity. As an admirer of all things Dixon, I felt as excited as a child at Christmas. I was able to interact with all of his products and designs under one roof at such a fitting location with the old industrial surroundings of the dock. This was the first opportunity to get my hands on the new season collection and discover just what Dixon had in store. 

The design of the Dock Kitchen itself (above) is designed to lead customers through six different environments: reception, deli, canteen, kitchen, salon and private dining room. Each area has its own unique identity that establishes its area, contrasting and looking fantastic next to one another. I had a chance to try out some of the menu and I must say that it was just as impressive as the design itself!

Beneath the kitchen on the lower level lies another impressive space, the shop. Set out in a large open plan area, the store is situated in line with the waters of the dock. Filled from floor to ceiling with Tom Dixon designs, I was pulled away from the impressive views across the dock into an incredible world of industrial design. Iconic Dixon designs share the space with the new collection allowing you to get a feel for the brand as a whole, never classifying an object as old or new. 

Each collection had been grouped together and located in different areas of the store. Being drawn in by the mesmerising patterns and shapes of the melt pendants, I would notice another favourite and seemed to walk backwards and forwards to different parts of the store. It was fascinating to see the response to the Lens Pendant, attracting visitors towards it with its mesmerising and magnifying lenses, similar to that of a car head light. 

In the duration of the time that I spent in the shop, there was one item that I was conscious of the whole time. The store was full of an incredible scent, welcoming, warm and woody. After questioning the scent, needing to know where it was coming from, I was informed that it was in fact the new season collection candle called Oil. I was amazed just how much aroma could come out of just one single candle. The collection itself is made up of a reed diffuser, two candle sizes (medium and small), a beautiful large vase and a compact wax diffuser. This collection has firmly taken its place at the top of my list! 

The highlight of the day was having the opportunity to meet Tom Dixon himself, an experience that I will never forget.
