The Art Deco Revival

Art Deco has always been a huge source of inspiration for many design styles. Take a look at the modern revival and get some interior design inspiration for yourself.

I have always had a fascination with Art Deco. It has such defining characteristics with its rich colours and bold geometric shapes. This identity has imprinted itself in our history through architecture, textiles and furniture. It is a period of time that celebrates the machine age and really plays with material, patterns and shape. Flourishing within the 20's, 30's and 40's, Art Deco represented true luxury and glamour. Whilst the true design will never come back in its full form, the inspiration of this time has never left us. There seems to be a new breed of Art Deco that has started to make its way back into our lives, with simpler forms, muted colouring and defining shapes. This revival of Art Deco makes it easier to incorporate smaller items of influence into a room. These items can act as key pieces and interact with other styles, something that I do not believe true Art Deco would ever be able to do. I wanted to bring together a collection of these items that refer to this new style to help give inspiration to all the Art Deco fans out there. With such defining characteristics, this is a style that I hope returns in full force one day. The period of Art Deco will never be forgotten.

Art Deco Furniture Inspiration

1. Universal Lighting Services LTD - Chrome Art Deco -Simple in its form with detailing to the glass shades, this ceiling light from Universal is a fitting example of a more subtle Art Deco design. Whilst you can tell that the item has been inspired by this period, it is not overpowering to a room and would fit in very well with simple furniture to a more modern standard.

2. Taylor Llorente - Deco Macassar Ebony Sideboard - This sideboard from Taylor Llorente is full of character. Using a classic geometric design in a Macassar ebony, the only thing that separates this from true Art Deco design is the deepness of the wood. By having the cabinet in a darker wood gives it a slightly more modern look and feel that would allow it to be a fantastic key piece in a dining room or living area.

3. Christopher Guy - Menton 4 - Fitting the modern and classic categories, the geometric design of this screen makes it an instant head turner. The screen is available in black, white or gold which allows it to fit different styles of rooms and allows for customisability. A very beautiful design that would fit perfectly in many living areas.

4. deLorentis - Belle Epoque - This wall clock has such a presence of classic New York that it would be easy to focus a whole room around its design. Continuing the symmetric design of Art Deco, it is actually the hands on the clock that I feel finish this clock off perfectly

5. Graham & Brown - Ennis - This metallic and textured wallpaper uses the defining geometric shapes of Art Deco but in muted tones. Perfect for a feature wall, the pattern revives the style without being too overpowering to a room.

6. Walter Von Nessen - Custom made Art Deco Lamp - A custom made design with an extreme amount of detail. This lamp represents the glamour of the Art Deco world. It almost represents a trophy with its slender body and top heavy design. I love the contrast in materials, it adds a feeling of warmth to the design.

7. Eero Aarnio - Ball Chair - My favourite item from the whole selection, this extremely beautiful chair uses materials that scream modern in a shape that screams Art Deco classic. The chair could easily fit in with many different styles and would make a fantastic feature to a bedroom, entertainment room or living area.
