Dubai Design District: designjunction 2017

As part of the UAE / UK Year of Collaboration, Dubai Design District 'd3' presented 'Middle East: Design Now!' an exhibition that features eighteen designers and artists work from the Middle East.
As the excitement builds for the third Dubai Design Week, 'd3' exhibited works from eighteen designers from across the Middle East including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. Part of the UAE / UK year of collaboration, the exhibition was designed to share designers work from a variety of creative fields, through different mediums that explore traditional methods, material and motifs in a modern-day context.
From the UAE, Aljoud Lootah created some of my favourite pieces from the exhibition including the Tebr vase and tableware designs featured in the first and second photos. These elegant pieces take inspiration from motifs carved into a door within the Al Ain Palace, the residence of the former UAE President and founder of the nation. Symbolising wealth, creativity and status, the tableware designs have been embellished with 14-carat gold patterns whilst the contemporary porcelain vases have been cast with similar decorative shapes and patterns for a striking and beautiful contemporary finish.
The works of Salsabeel Amin also caught the eye of visitors with the Ore collection, lighting designs that are inspired by Earth's materials. Combining three main elements: marble, brass and glass, the pieces are designed to have a simple form, complimenting one another when grouped together in different sizes or to connect with the rooms surrounding features.
The Middle East: Design Now! installation for this year's designjunction has given us a fantastic insight into what is to come with this year's Dubai Design Week that runs from 13-18th November. It is refreshing to see a passion and support for design that connects traditional methods and craft with modern day life and style. Now entering its third year, it is great to see the connection of Middle Eastern design with a British exhibition such as designjunction.
