designjunction: The Canopy
Posted on October 09 2016
Highlights and discoveries from this year's visit to designjunction. Forth day visit centred around The Canopy including brands such as Pikaplant and Bloomon.
On the final day of designjunction, I was very excited to visit the Canopy. The specially built pop-up venue contained seventy retail brands, displaying everything from intricate small home accessories to large beautiful bouquets of flowers. The canopy had such an excitement about the space, constructed predominantly from exposed chipboard to add a contemporary designer workshop feel. With so many incredible brands on display, it was hard for me to pick just a few special favourites.
Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the gorgeous scents and colours of the Bloomon stand. Beautiful collections of flowers were grouped together on display at the back, ready to be styled into amazing bouquets of flowers in small, medium and large displays, an example of the flower subscription service that the brand provides. It was great to witness first hand the quality and examples of blooms available whilst admiring the autumnal vibrancy that the stand injected into its surroundings.
Pikaplant was one of my top selections to view at this year's designjunction as featured in the designjunction social media takeover in August. I love the modern take on a familiar concept, one that has often been unsightly. Pikaplant has managed to minimise maintenance and care for plants whilst glamorising the process, creating unique products that not only emphasise the beauty of the plants but add an artistic twist too.
One item that I spotted from a distance and immediately had to explore was the Plantini Mini Planthouse available at Another Studio. This very cute miniature plant house not only has the added fun of self-assembly but is an intricate home accessory that looks great by itself or with an additional decorative plant. Another Studio is a craft-design practice that created original products for the desk, home and workplace. Working in a range of beautiful materials, this studio puts the curiosity and excitement back into home accessories, creating designs that immediately attract the eye and make you smile.
Whilst not directly part of the Canopy. Vita Copenhagen had a display unlike any other at this year's exhibition. A glass van, exhibiting fun and striking lighting designs for passers-by to peer in and admire. Described as "a place where beautiful Danish lighting design meets the Scandinavian feel" I was impressed to discover that all of the lights are designed to fit in compact gift boxes, making delivery and storage simple whilst reducing the environmental footprint. With such a fun display and individual products, I cannot wait to see where this brand pops up next.
After four incredible days, my visit to desinjunction has finally finished for the year. I cannot tell you how much fun I have had this past week and it has been amazing to discover new brands and inspirational designers.
