Clerkenwell Design Week: Day Two Highlights

Highlights from the second day at Clerkenwell Design Week, discovering the Tom Dixon Church project with striking rotating pendant chandelier. 

It was another full day at Clerkenwell Design Week, packed with fantastic workshops, immersive designs and inspirational talks from Tom Dixon and Andrew Baughen just to name a few. As many of you will already know, I love everything Tom Dixon so when I discovered that he would be talking at his exhibition "The Church" I picked up my bags and immediately made my way to the event.

Dixon's exhibitions are famed for being captivating experiences, connecting design with nature, spirituality and history, all within picturesque surroundings that allow you to pause and appreciate the story behind each design. Discussing his history, development and passion for design, the talk was both informative and humorous. Andrew Baughen, the vicar of the church continued the talk, expanding on the idea of spirituality within the design, referencing the true meaning of legacy and stories that design creates. 

The centrepiece of the church is a magnificent chandelier containing nineteen individual curve pendant ball lights in different sizes suspended at different levels. There is a beautiful movement to the design and it is mesmerising to see the chandelier slowly spin and move directions. Other sections of the church have also been furnished with items from the Tom Dixon collection including wingback chairs and copper accessories to create relaxing meeting spaces, Y-chairs and screw tables for working spaces and even a central pylon dining table for meetings and events.

Everyone's favourite Baker Street Boys have been exhibiting their latest collection of mix and match innovative furniture designs at the House of Detention this week. These brilliant designs use a combination of beautiful materials such as black and white marble, luxurious woods and metals that can be mixed and matched to create a custom look. What I love about the design week is that you can spend the entire day wandering around, discovering showrooms and displays nestled within the winding streets of Clerkenwell or you can plan your day via the exhibition route. No matter how much time you have, there is something that you can do, designers to see and workshops to take part in. My favourite wondering discovery had to be the Museum of the order of St John. I have passed this very intriguing building on several occasions but it was the CDW2016 sign outside that finally fueled my curiosity to walk in and discover more. Detail plays host to fine craftsmanship and high glamour brands including a personal favourite, Poliform with their stunning lounge chairs!
